Make or break as Westmeath welcome Laois to town

image preview

After a double U21 and senior clash with Meath last week, it is now the turn of another old foe, Laois, to come to town. First our seniors welcome the O’Moore men to Cusack Park for a make or break Division 2 game on Sunday at 2.30pm. Then on St Patrick’s Day it’s the turn of the U21s from both counties to contest the Leinster semi-final. What a treat of football on our doorstep at this early stage of the year.

Major battle in store for minor footballers

image preview

Westmeath’s minor footballers face a major battle this weekend as they face Meath in the Leinster minor football quarter-final. Ger Heavin’s young charges face the added difficulty of having to travel to the lions’ den to take on the reigning provincial champions. Having easily accounted for Carlow in the opening round this will be a much sterner test.

Last weekend’s action on the playing fields means that the football championships on either side of the Shannon have reached the quarter-final stages. While a lot of football has yet to be played before any silverware is handed out, things have become a lot clearer, now that we have reached the knock-out stage.

Loman’s dare to dream, but Garrycastle to rule supreme

image preview

What an intriguing county final pairing this year’s Westmeath senior championship has thrown up. And what a final lies in store. In the green and red corner we have a Garrycastle outfit hungry to make amends for last year’s county final defeat to Castledaly. In the blue corner are the underdogs, St Loman’s, making their first county final appearance in 41 years. Indeed it was 1963 when the Saints won their third and last county senior title. Aside from the medals on offer, neither set of players will be lacking in motivation to play the game of their lives when the ball is throw in at 3.30pm.
